El Festival tuvo su primera edición en Abril de 1999, organizado por la Secretaría de Cultura de la
Ciudad de Buenos Aires de aquel entonces.
En su primera edición contó con más de 146 invitados, entre ellos figuras del calibre de Francis Ford Coppola, Todd Haynes o Paul Morrisey, y se proyectaron más de 150 películas entre nacionales y extranjeras. La convocatoria fue de alrededor de 12000 espectadores.
Desde entonces cada año se repite cada vez con mayor cantidad de oferta de películas y actividades paralelas (como charlas, conferencias y talleres), y con una igual creciente de convocatoria de público del Festival.

The first edition of the Festival was in April 1999, organiced by the Secretaría de Cultura de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires of that time.
In its first edition it had more than 140 guests, among whom we can count characters Francis Ford Coppola, Todd Haynes or Paul Morrisey, and more than a 150 movies, national or foreigners, were shown. It summonned more than 12000 viewers.
Since then, every year there is a bigger ammount of movies and paralell activities offers (such as conferences and workshops), and with an equal growth in its summonning.

Desde su inauguración en el año '99 el Festival se consolidó como uno de los más destacados del mundo, con un importante reconocimiento y un lugar de privilegio en la agenda cinematográfica internacional. Es reconocido como vehículo fundamental de promoción para la producción independiente, que suele mostrar los filmes más innovadores, arriesgados y comprometidos de la época. A través de su amplia programación el festival integra diversas expresiones culturales y reúne directores consagrados y nuevos talentos en un ámbito dinámico. Con un amplio rango de películas que incluye premieres mundailes, argentinas y latinoamericanas, además de merecidas retrospectivas, es el evento más grande y prestigioso para el cine independiente en América Latina.
Since its inauguration in the 99' the Festival consolidated as one of the most prominent in the world, with an important recognition and a privileged place in the international cinematographic agenda. It is known as a fundamental vehicle of promotion for the independent production, that uses to show the most innovating, risky and commited films of its time. Through its broad program, the festival integrates diverse cultural expressions and gathers the most acclaimed directors such as new talents in a dinamic enviroment. With a wide range of movies that include world premieres, argentinian and latin american, and some well deserved retrospectives,it is the most privileged event for independent cinema in Latin America.
Los números finales de la última edición revelan el crecimiento de convocatoria y de la confirmación del Festival como un verdadero acontecimiento de la nutrida agenda cultural de la Ciudad. En total unas 350.000 personas participaron de la decimocuarta edición del
BAFICI, lo que representa un 15% más que en la edición 2011.
Adicionalmente al creciente número de espectadores de cada año, el festival ha ido incorporando propuestas tales como un ciclo de cine argentino al aire libre, en el pasaje
Carlos Gardel del barrio del Abasto, el BAFICITO, con películas para los más chicos, y hasta el ANIMATIONBOX, un taller de entrada libre y gratuita, también para niños.
The final numbers of the last edition reveal the growth in the summoning and they confirm the Festival as a real event of the nourished cultural agenda of the City. An overall of 350.000 people took part of the fourteenth edition of BAFICI, wich represents a 15% more than the edition 2011.
In Addition to the growing number of espectators each year, the festival has been implementing proposals such as an open air argentinian movie cycle, at the Carlos Gardel passage in Almagro neighbourhood. the BAFICITO, with movies for children, and even the ANIMATIONBOX, a free workshop, also for kids.
Buenos Aires respira cine, y el público porteño, célebre por su cinefilia y fidelidad, acompaña cada edición en creciente número. El circuito de exhibición incluyó este año 23 salas repartidas en 11 sedes, con agregados en esta edición del Planetario Galileo Galilei, y su sala especial con proyecciones en sistema Full-Dome, el Centro Cultural San Martín con sus dos nuevas salas, y el Anfiteatro del
Parque Centenario como sede de los ciclos de Cine al Aire Libre y el BAFICITO.
